The Island

This island is the craziest place. Whatever you do, absolutely do not be an 'off-islander'. Driving cars, smiling at every person that passes, and knowing the super secret two finger island wave lets you blend in for a time. In the end, though, you just know who is an islander and who is not.

Internet can be found solely at the cafe I work at ( Bread and Waters ), which opens at 8 (those of you that know me, know that this is pretty much a physical impossibility) and closes at 3. Or at a church in the middle of woods with no external outlets (sound weird? that just about sums up the ridiculousness of this island)

Yesterday. Yesterday was one series of ridiculous adventures, summed up in a few brief words: New room?! ( "here's your room, put something heavy against the door or the goat will break in" "The kids have been coming in here to try to light this barn on fire, so it's good that you'll be living here now." ) Musical jam session in a barn, complete with banjo, guitar and piano, dancing 6 year old girls, a 65+ year old knitting club spinning wool into yarn (with a spinning wheel!), and the cutest baby you have ever seen dancing to 'Waltzing   with Bears'. It was wonderful. To borrow a metaphor I used describing it to a friend today:

It's like Northwoods Wisconsin, combined with Gilligans Island, combined with crazy town, USA. All wrapped up in one big enchilada of awesome.

Welcome to the Island.

Welcome to the island.

Good lord, what have I gotten myself into? No internets so sporadic updates from here on in.

FIRST POST! (Goodbyes?)

Well let me start this off by clarifying, when it comes to blogging I am of the 'shorter is sweeter' mentality. Per previous blogs, I will try to accompany every post with a picture and here is the picture du jour! Negative $55? NEGATIVE money? Hah, an auspicious start to 24!

Friday was a day of lasts. Goodbyes weird me out, and leaving people I worked with for 4 years was the worst (hug? handshake? wave? there needs to be a book of social rules for this kind of stuff!) In the end it was the building that was the weirdest to say goodbye to (might be the first time I've talked out loud to a building before!) Last night was goodbye to many good friends, Brogans, state street, and other Madison stalwarts.

Now, it's off to the brave bold unknown (of the parents basement for a few days) and then Washington Island here I come?! Oh lordy!

For now, and for any of my friends reading this, "Be well, do good work, and keep in touch" – Garrison Keillor.
